Wednesday, 9 p.m.: Poetry Night at Caffe Aroma, biweekly open mic reading series hosted by Ben Brindise and Justin Karcher. 957 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo.
Thursday, 12:15 p.m.: SUNY Buffalo State University Emanuel Fried Drop Hammer Series reading featuring award-winning Rochester, NY based poet and short fiction writer Sarah Freligh. Room 302, Ketchum Hall on the Buffalo State University Campus. The Drop Hammer Series, which is curated by writer Kim Chinquee, is free and open to the public.
Thursday, 7 p.m.: Buffalo Corner Reading Series featuring fiction writer Stephen Eoannou, poet Karen Elizabeth Sharpe, and Rabbi Alex Lazarus Klein. This will be a hybrid event: Eoannou and Klein will be reading in person, and Sharpe will be participating via Zoom. Congregation Shir Shalom, 4660 Sheridan Drive in Amherst. Thursday, 7 p.m.: The Calamus Project and the Burchfield Penney Art Center present Whitman on Walls! This special event features seven short films in which the international theater company Compagnia de’ Colombari brings passages from Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” to life. After each film, local performance poets, including Buffalo’s poet laureate, Jillian Hanesworth, J.B. Stone, and Brandon Williamson, founder of Pure Ink Poetry, will perform original pieces responding to the films. Opening the evening is Curtis Lovell, accompanied by Luis Montijo, performing two of the songs she has created from Walt Whitman’s poems for the Calamus Project. Burchfield Penney Art Center Auditorium, 1300 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo. Free and open to the public.
Friday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.: 4th Friday Poetry Series featuring Buffalo-based poet Theresa Wyatt. Additional reading slots available. Dog Ears Bookstore & Café, 688 Abbott Rd., Buffalo. $5.
Saturday, 7 p.m.: Wordism, a noncompetitive open mic event series for spoken word artists. New and veteran artists are welcome. Rooted Lounge, 69 Allen St., Buffalo. $5 cash only admission.
